Position: Healthcare Assistant

Salary: £28,622 to £30,225 per annum

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

About the Role

The HCA role at this level, will be allocated and agreed upon via plans of care, assessed and evaluated by a registered nurse. They will implement, and deliver care under the guidance of more experienced registered practitioners supported by a monitored process of on-going supervision and support.

This role will be expected to work with high levels of support and supervision, with adherence to agreed instruction, whilst being guided and supported within Trust procedures and policies. As part of the wider Team, the post holder will be responsible for participating and assisting in the delivery of care/services to service users as part of a Mental Health Care Team, working under the direct supervision of a registered member of staff. This will involve being responsible for carrying out practical tasks, identified as part of the service user’s care plan or care pathways. This vacancy may close early.

Main Duties

• To work with, talk to and listen to service users and ensure any change in their condition is accurately and promptly communicated to the named nurse.
• Accompany patients, including escorting sectioned patients, to various agencies, centres and other hospitals in the community and outside the Trust as required.
• Take due consideration of the cultural, social and religious beliefs of patients, relatives and visitors and respect patients as individuals whose needs include social, spiritual, emotional and physical care.
• Ensure that patients’ nutritional support and personal care needs are met. This may include helping patients to get comfortable for meals, assisting with feeding where necessary assisting with serving meals and assisting with their care.
• To assist trained staff in upholding a high standard of nursing care, including close and physical observations of patients, by practices and procedures.
• Assist in the maintenance of a safe and pleasant physical environment for patients and staff.
• Assist in the confidential safekeeping of patients’ nursing and medical records, including appropriate entries on RiO.
• Ensure the safekeeping of patient’s property and valuables by policies and procedures.
• To develop and maintain appropriate relationships with patients, relatives and care.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 3
• 2-3 years of experience working with service users with mental health needs

Desirable

• Completion of and attending training updates in the Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression

Knowledge (essential)

• Awareness of the key principles of the MHA 1983 as they are applied to the role of the Nursing Assistant
• Knowledge of appropriate Policies and Procedures.
• Knowledge of mental health issues, treatments and the effects and uses of medications relevant to the role of the Nursing Assistant.

Skills and personal qualities (essential)

• Able to demonstrate an understanding of the needs of individual service users, their relatives and carers
• Effective listening skills
• Willingness to work flexibly in response to changing situations on the ward.
• Able to communicate effectively with colleagues, service users and relatives/carers verbally and in writing as required

Desirable

• Previous use of RIO Electronic Patient Record
