The annual Rhodes Scholarship is now receiving applications from international students who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree at Oxford University. Students who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply.

Established in 1903, the Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s oldest and most prestigious international scholarship program. The Rhodes Scholarship is a life-changing opportunity to join outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully funded, full-time, postgraduate award which enables talented young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. Applying for the Scholarship is a challenge, but it is an experience which has helped generations of young people to succeed. Applications are encouraged from talented students everywhere. Rhodes Scholars come to the UK for two or more years and can apply to study most full-time postgraduate courses offered by Oxford University.

Rhodes Scholars come from all backgrounds and we welcome applications from talented young persons of diverse backgrounds. Selection is made without regard to gender, gender identity, marital status, sexual orientation, race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, social background, caste, or disability.

Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship:

You must be aged 18-24 on 1^st October 2024 (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1999 and before 2 October 2006).

OR for medical, dental, pharmaceutical, law and engineering students, to allow you to complete your professional internship

You must be aged 18-25 on 1^st October 2024 (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1998 and before 2 October 2006)

OR for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual

You must be under the age of 27 on 1^st October 2024 (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1997) AND you must also have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2023
You must have completed an undergraduate degree (normally a Bachelor’s degree) by the application deadline with an academic background and grade that is a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent which meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford; in the case of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy courses, the highest classification your University awards, e.g. a Distinction would be considered equivalent to a First Class Honours Degree.
To take up a place on one of our courses, you must be able to demonstrate English language proficiency at the University’s standard or higher level. You do not need to provide evidence of English language proficiency if you meet one of the following criteria:
Your first language is English and you have always been a citizen of and primarily resident in a majority English-speaking country recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI); or
You are a current Oxford student applying for readmission.

Benefits of the Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees, as well as providing an annual stipend. For the 2023/24 academic year, the stipend is £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Please note – this is not sufficient to cover partners or dependents.

In partnership with the Chevening International Scholarship, the University of Leicester is now accepting applications for the Chevening-Leicester Scholarships, offering students the opportunity to pursue a one-year postgraduate research program.

Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship

Eligible applicants for the Chevening-Leicester Partner Scholarship must be from Chevening-eligible countries (excluding India) and studying a one-year taught master course within the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities or the School of Geography, Geology and the Environment, starting in September 2025.

In addition to the above requirements, you will also need to fulfil the standard Chevening requirements below:

Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your scholarship ends.
Have at least two years of work experience (2,800 hours).
Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master’s programme.
Apply to three different and eligible UK university courses. You must have received an unconditional offer from at least one of these course choices by the references and education documents deadline listed on the application timeline.
Before applying for a Chevening Scholarship, you need at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience. This can include:
- Full-time employment
- Part-time employment
- Voluntary work
- Paid or unpaid internships
- Experience gained during mandatory employment for your degree does not count. You can combine up to fifteen different work periods to meet the requirement.

You are not eligible if you:

Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
Hold refugee status in a country not eligible for Chevening. However, if you are a citizen of an eligible country and hold refugee status in another eligible country, you are eligible for a scholarship.
Are an employee, former employee, or relative of an employee of the UK government, British Embassies/High Commissions, the British Council, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, or sponsoring UK universities. Employees, former employees, or relatives of an employee of Chevening Partner organisations are eligible to apply, but if the employment took place within the last two years, you cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organisation from which you work, previously worked, or are affiliated with through relatives.
Have previously studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship.
