Tongarewa International Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington

International students who wish to obtain an undergraduate or postgraduate degree can now apply for the Tongarewa International Scholarship Programme at Victoria University of Wellington.

The Tongarewa International Scholarships celebrate TeHerengaWaka—Victoria University of Wellington’s commitment to the international student community. Each year, the university awards a range of these scholarships to international students. This partial fee-based scholarship contributes to tuition fees for one year of study. Applicants can be either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree programme at the university.

Scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic excellence. They apply to study in the year following application and will be credited to tuition fees. Shortlisted candidates may be requested to provide additional information to support their application. Recipients of these scholarships are guaranteed an offer of a place in one of the university’s Halls of Residence, provided an accommodation application is received by University Accommodation Wellington by the deadline.

TeHerengaWaka—Victoria University of Wellington is New Zealand’s top-ranked university for the intensity of high-quality research (latest Performance-Based Research Fund evaluation). It is the only university to twice top the country’s main measure of research excellence. More than 2,200 publications resulting from the University’s researchers’ work were published in 2021.

TeHerengaWaka—Victoria University of Wellington has approximately 22,000 students, including international students from around 100 countries. The University awarded 4,369 qualifications in 2022. Victoria University of Wellington has three main campuses and the Miramar Creative Centre in Wellington. They also have premises in Auckland. In addition to the main campuses, the school has several research centres and institutes.

The University has nine faculties, eight of which conduct teaching and research. The University’s faculties are divided into schools, many of which are closely aligned with the University’s numerous research centres and institutes. The Faculty of Graduate Research is responsible for the administration of doctoral student’s candidature.

Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship for Africans

Applicants must be:

  • International students who are paying full international fees
  • Entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if you:

  • Completed your secondary education at a New Zealand school
  • Completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Programme
  • Are a Study Abroad or Twinning student from one of our overseas partner universities
  • Are in your second year of study in the same degree programme at Victoria University of Wellington.

Benefits of the Scholarship

  • The value of these scholarships is $5000 or $10000
  • These scholarships are for partial fees. These scholarships will be credited to tuition fees after the final withdrawal date for the courses of the trimester the recipient(s) have been awarded for (roughly two weeks into the trimester).

Selection Process

Selection will be made by a panel made up of appropriate Wellington University International staff. Scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic excellence.

Required Documents

The following documentation must be provided as part of your online scholarship application:

  1. A personal statement of up to 500 words outlining why you wish to study at TeHerengaWaka—Victoria University of Wellington, your academic goals and why you merit the scholarship. You should also include any leadership positions and details of your involvement in your school or community
  2. Full transcripts and other documentation relevant to the qualification type
  3. An offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).

Regulations and Conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
